DESCRIPTION:I  originally gave this talk in the summer of 2016 and I know there are some of you who will have attended. It was on a very warm August Friday night in the Peill Room and Stu and I prepared some tasty Indian nosh to go with the proceedings. Although what I say will be based on the talk I gave then\, I will add a section about both my mum’s and dad’s families and why they found themselves in India in 1914 and 1920 respectively when my mum and dad were born. I won’t say any more so as to whet your appetite for the talk on the 25th. \nHowever\, it would be great if people brought relevant artefacts to the screen. Linda has already promised an Indian Jewish cookbook\, which I hope to clap eyes on beforehand so I can prepare myself some veggie Indian nosh for the evening. Helen has artefacts that Chris collected on his numerous trips to India in support of his charity based in the south of the country. Chris from Peterborough mentioned that she had some information about the Kerralan Jews. If you have any artefacts or relevant recipes of a Jewish Indian flavour please have them with you. DESCRIPTION:Please join Rabbi Gershon Silins and our community at the Old Meeting House for our monthly Shabbat service. \nAfter our service on 14 September\, NLJC is delighted to welcome a guest speaker\, Debra Bruner\, from The Together Plan. One of our members\, Stephen Haire\, has been fundraising for this charity. Its mission is to help isolated Jewish communities in the former Soviet Union and Eastern Europe learn skills for self-development. \nThe Together Plan https://thetogetherplan.com has just become a member of the European Association for the Preservation and Promotion of Jewish Heritage https://www.jewisheritage.org and is now building a Jewish Route through Belarus. \nWe have extended this invitation to members of the Norwich Hebrew Congregation. It promises to be a fascinating talk and will be preceded by a chavurah lunch. DESCRIPTION:Rabbi Jonathan Wittenberg is the Senior Rabbi of Masorti Judaism UK. He is a leading writer and thinker on Judaism. He is rabbi of New North London Synagogue with approximately 2\,400 members. He is also a member of the Elijah Interfaith Institute. He has published several books on widely diverse subjects\, all of which\, together with his blog\, can be found on his website. \nFor our Martin Buber Lecture\, his starting point will be his latest book\, “Things My Dog taught me\, and then broaden his talk to include his other interests and those of his audience. So please come along and ask him whatever you like! \n‘There’s a special art to doing just one thing\, at one time\, with the whole of one’s self. To appreciate what that looks like\, all one has to do is watch a dog staring at a biscuit. Every facet of its being\, the alignment of its head\, the gaze of its eyes\, the poise of its posture\, are all directed at that small but infinitely desirable object’. \n  \nAdmission: Suggested donation £4.00 p.p.

DESCRIPTION:For everyone – children and adults\n\nPlease do join us all for a rollicking reading of the Scroll of Ester\n\nWe will read the Megillah through in as many different languages as possible – a little bit of Hebrew\, a lot of English\, a little bit of French\, Spanish\, Greek\, Hungarian\, Nigerian and what else??\n\nPlease get into the Purim spirit! Dress up or at wear a funny hat or a mask. Bring your own gregger or other noisemaker.  Bring some hamantaschen if you can! Sarah’s making savoury so we can have hamantashen light meal.  Bring a bottle of something to drink! (But drink responsibly\, especially if driving.)\n\nAnd may you have so much fun that eventually you can’t tell the difference between Mordecai and Haman (boo\, hiss)!\n\nPurim sameah! Good food\, of course\, too. \nOur Toldot Mishpechotenu project is just starting with this Chavurah lunch and will run for several months and longer as members of our community explore their family heritage and share that with the community.
