SUMMARY:Holocaust Memorial Day
DESCRIPTION:The number of events and services has been increasing around Norfolk and elsewhere\, encouraging everyone to remember and stand together to spread the need to stop division and hatred. \nIn Norwich a public service of remembrance for the Holocaust is to take place at St Peter Mancroft Church. \n\nThis is an annual event commemorating the day Auschwitz-Birkenau was liberated from the terror of the Holocaust in the Second World War. This day is to remember the six million Jews murdered during the Holocaust\, and millions of other people killed under Nazi Persecution. Subsequent genocides in Cambodia\, Rwanda\, Bosnia and Darfur will also be remembered. \nThe theme this year is ‘Stand Together’.  We will remember and everyone is encouraged to stand together to stop division and the spread of hatred in our society. \n Reverend Fiona Haworth\, Associate Priest of St Peter Mancroft Church and Rabbi Roderick Young\, member of the Norwich Hebrew Congregation and the Norwich Liberal Jewish Community. With Student Rabbi Hannah Altorf will lead this service.

SUMMARY:Holocaust Memorial Day
DESCRIPTION:This year\, Holocaust Memorial Day in Norwich will be held online. \nHolocaust Memorial Day\, which falls on the anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz\, is on Wednesday 27th January.  The theme of this year’s Holocaust Memorial Day is “Be the light in the darkness.” \nSadly\, but not unexpectedly\, our annual service held in St. Peter Mancroft cannot happen this year.  Instead\, Norwich City Council will upload a pre-recorded tribute to YouTube at exactly 2pm on 27th January\, the time that our service would have happened. \nThe tribute will consist of contributions from Bishop Graham of Norwich Cathedral\, from Rev. Fiona Howarth of St. Peter Mancroft\, from Sheriff Marian Prinsley and from myself.  More importantly\, the tribute will include deeply moving testimony from survivors of the Shoah\, the Cambodian genocide and of the recent Rohingya persecution and a poetry reading by the great actor Nina Sosanya. \nWe had hoped for some Hebrew songs from the choir of Notre Dame High School\, Norwich\, but\, sadly\, repeated Covid school closures made that impossible in the end – next year!  But we do hope to show some art from local schools and there will be beautiful (socially distanced!) singing from the St. Peter Mancroft choir. \nWhen Norwich City Council gives us the link to the recording we will share it with members and friends by email.

SUMMARY:Talk on the Jews of India
DESCRIPTION:I  originally gave this talk in the summer of 2016 and I know there are some of you who will have attended. It was on a very warm August Friday night in the Peill Room and Stu and I prepared some tasty Indian nosh to go with the proceedings. Although what I say will be based on the talk I gave then\, I will add a section about both my mum’s and dad’s families and why they found themselves in India in 1914 and 1920 respectively when my mum and dad were born. I won’t say any more so as to whet your appetite for the talk on the 25th. \nHowever\, it would be great if people brought relevant artefacts to the screen. Linda has already promised an Indian Jewish cookbook\, which I hope to clap eyes on beforehand so I can prepare myself some veggie Indian nosh for the evening. Helen has artefacts that Chris collected on his numerous trips to India in support of his charity based in the south of the country. Chris from Peterborough mentioned that she had some information about the Kerralan Jews. If you have any artefacts or relevant recipes of a Jewish Indian flavour please have them with you. I look forward to seeing you there. \nA Zoom link will be circulated to all members and friends. If you not a member or friend and would like to join this talk\, please contact us. \nAnnie Henriques

SUMMARY:Holocaust Memorial Day Service
DESCRIPTION:Holocaust Memorial Day is a time for everyone to remember the millions upon millions of people who have been murdered or whose lives have been changed beyond recognition during the Holocaust\, Nazi Persecution as well as subsequent genocides in Cambodia\, Rwanda\, Bosnia and Darfur. and other locations.  We can also honour and listen to survivors of these regimes challenging ourselves to use the lessons of their experiences to inform how we act in our lives today.  Holocaust Memorial Day marks the liberation of Auchwitz-Birkenau\, the largest Nazi death camp. \nThis Service at the Norwich Cathedral\, Cathedral Close\, is coordinated by CCJ (Council for Christians and Jews) on behalf of Norfolk County Council.  Norwich Liberal Jewish Community and Norwich Hebrew Congregation are involved in this service with CCJ. Rabbi Leah will be leading prayers for the first time at this service. \nAs noted above\, we will remember those who died in the Holocaust (Shoah)\, and also those who\, we are horrified to say\, have died in more recent genocides. Let us remember and also take action to help prevent such events in the future.

SUMMARY:Annual Martin Buber Lecture
