Service and Tikkun Leyl Shavuot

23 May 2015 @ 7:15 PM - 9:30 PM

Shavuot is a festival which is 40 days from the end of Pesach (evening 11th April). It is a harvest festival, but more importantly commemorates the giving of the Torah to the Jews. Our Shavuot observance will consist of three parts: a short service (7.15 pm), an informal bring-and-share meal featuring dairy products (read: cheesecake!), and community-led study sessions.

We’d be pleased if you chip in with dairy main dishes or desserts with cheese.

The study session honours the similar “tikkun” held each year by the 16th-century mystical rabbis of Safed, during which the rabbis and their students stayed up all night on Shavuot studying sacred texts. We will not stay up all night, but as other communities do, we will come together and enjoy Jewish learning across a range of topics. NLJC is happy to be working with the Norwich Hebrew Congregation as we bring the Tikkun (repairing) concept to Norwich again.

The topics from NLJC – Annie will tell us about Jews in India and Joel will talk about the Book of Ruth
