Our congregation

Welcome to the Norwich Liberal Jewish Community (formerly Progressive Jewish Community of East Anglia). We subscribe to the principles of Liberal Judaism and are a friendly, welcoming community that values visits from non-members to our services and events.

Our rabbi visits us for one weekend a month, when he officiates at a service, as well as conducting a children’s cheder and leading a session of Engaging With Judaism, our adult education programme.

Our rabbi also supports teaching for those wishing to convert to Judaism. Occasionally visiting Rabbis lead us in education and worship. Our High Holy Day rabbi is sometimes a visiting rabbi, and a number of Shabbat and festival services during the year are led by members of the community.

In between Shabbat service weekends we offer a variety of events, such as celebrating festivals, Shabbat lunches with an educational input and social evenings. We celebrate a communal second-night Seder for Passover.

We also offer religious ceremonies for weddings, funerals, baby blessings, Bar/Bat Mitzvah and Kabbalat Torah. Members receive a monthly newsletter.

The Norwich Liberal Jewish Community seeks to maintain good relations with the orthodox Norwich Hebrew Congregation, arranging joint activities from time to time.
