Shavuot Service and Community Tikkun Leyl Shavuot
3 June 2014 @ 6:30 PM - 9:30 PM
Shavuot, also a harvest festival 40 days from the end of Pesach, commemorates the giving of the Torah to the Jews. Our Shavuot observance will consist of three parts: a short service (6.30 pm), an informal bring-and-share meal* featuring dairy products (read: cheesecake!), and community-led study sessions (till about 9.30).
The study session honours the similar “tikkun” held each year by the 16th-century mystical rabbis of Safed, during which the rabbis and their students stayed up all night on Shavuot studying sacred texts. In the modern world, communities come together and enjoy Jewish learning across a range of topics. NLJC is happy to be working with the Norwich Hebrew Congregation as we bring the Tikkun concept to Norwich for the first time (that we know of!).
The topics for this year’s Tikkun:
- Extreme Jews: Jews in far-flung places
- A history of conversion
- Discussion: “The Chosen People”: what does it mean?
- Chanting the Torah blessings: a supportive, hands-on workshop
*All food should be vegetarian or permitted fish, but cheesecake or savoury dairy dishes are particularly encouraged for Shavuot.
