What is not to love – the Song of Songs at Pesach
The Song of Songs (in Hebrew Shir haShirim) is one of the more unusual books of Tanach. It is an erotic love poem, which, as our rabbis hasten to explain, is about God’s love for Israel, rather than any love between two people. Does their explanation make the poem any easier to appreciate? This week we will study excerpts from the Song of Songs in anticipation of Pesach, when it is traditionally read. We also consider Theodorakis’ powerful contemporary adaptation.
